VERY CRITICAL NOTES FOR MISERY CHALLENGERS 2017

1. ALL MAPS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE... 2017's course will be run differently in some ways compared to 2016. Final course maps to be completed by June. Swimmers will have a short land/sand (approx. 150 yards.) Finish.

2.  SWIMMERS: Please bring I.D. to Registration (and for after party!). You will be doing a beach start from Tuck’s Point Beach. Please keep in mind that the bottom is a bit rocky and be careful of your footing especially when finishing. In addition, to add to the Challenge part of the Misery Challenge, it will be LOW TIDE. You will be have points soon after the start where you can WALK or DOLPHIN. Deeper waters are closer to the moored boats on your right, but be VERY careful of the mooring buoys and their boats.

Swimmers you will be sent in PAIRS (two by two). You must check in with Racewire Officials - Shout your Race Number and Confirm - before you enter the water. This is crucial for safety. Self-Select your starting position based off of ability. Expecting to win this thing? Front row baby! See this as a challenge? Go wherever comfortable. Remember all timing is from timing mat to timing mat. You could start last and still be first! You must attend meeting at 8:10am. Start time is 8:15 am.

3. ROWERS/KAYAKERS/SUPS: Please bring I.D. to Registration. Life-Jacket/Safety Check will be done upon launch and/or while on the water. No jacket, No Challenge. You will be lined up at 3 different times depending on your boat class. Rowers will start sometime 7:40/45 and then approx. 5 mins. afterwards the Kayakers and then 5 mins. after that the SUP’s.

Please spread out away from starting line back towards the inlet behind the Chowder House... rowers towards the front, then kayakers, then SUPs back into the inlet. I won't start you until all categories are in place. We will have a TIGHT line-up and I ask you to be patient and VERY CAREFUL OF MOORED BOATS.

This is a time trial format! Wherever you start, your total time is what officially counts. Starting will be done by bib number and numerical order. Double Kayaks and Shells should be at the front of cue. Start line will be under Yacht club ramp and Finish line is the Red Channel Buoy and the Rotunda. Be sure to shout your bib number out before you cross both start and finish line. Pre-Race meeting ON THE WATER is at 7:35am. Start time: 7:45am

4. CHANNEL CROSSING NEAR START AND FINISH: I ask you to be very aware of ALL other boats, moving or moored on race day. You will be crossing the channel by the start and finish as well as out by the harbor’s exit and it will be up to you to watch out for other boats that may be in your path. The waters are NOT CLOSED to outside craft, but USCG safety zones have been created and we will have patrol boats to help secure your safe crossing. Keep your eyes peeled at all times.

5. RACE OFFICIALS AND SAFETY: Most all Volunteers will be in BRIGHT MISERY CHALLENGE SHIRTS. There will be SUPs and Kayaks out on the course to direct and act as spotters. Please watch for any direction signals they may give you. There will be several patrol boats in case of need – look for the bright shirts on board.

Only the Harbormaster and his team will go in to pull folks from the water if need be, but any boat or vessel should be alerted if someone has any issue and stay with you until proper help arrives. Whistles are highly recommended to be carried by Challengers and should be blown 5X quickly and repeatedly in case of emergency. Please do not hesitate to ask for help or to help a fellow racer. Any time lost helping another will be recorded and deducted off of your overall time. SAFETY FIRST!
